Cosmetic Procedures Up 5 Percent in 2011

Posted Monday, February 13, 2012 by NewBeauty Staff

For the second year in a row, the number of cosmetic procedures performed in America increased, illustrating that an uncertain economy isn't deterring patients. A total of 13.8 million cosmetic procedures, both invasive and minimally invasive, were performed in 2011, a 5 percent increase over 2010. Reconstructive surgeries were also up 5 percent to 5.5 million procedures, according to reports released this week from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Somewhat surprisingly, facelifts saw a 5 percent increase (119,000 procedures) for the first time since 2004, yet eyelid surgery saw a 6 percent decrease. The top five surgeries included facelifts, as well as breast augmentation (307,000 procedures), nose reshaping (244,000), liposuction (205,000) and eyelid surgery (196,000).

Among minimally invasive treatments, Botox injections lead with 5.7 million procedures, followed by fillers (1.9 million), chemical peels (1.1 million), laser hair removal (1.1 million) and microdermabrasion (900,000). Laser hair removal saw the biggest jump, up 15 percent, since 2010.

"While the rate of economic recovery in the U.S. is still uncertain, 2011 proved to be a good year for plastic surgery," said ASPS President Malcolm Z. Roth, MD. "Consumer confidence was up, auto sales rose 10 percent, so it is not surprising that we would also see increased demand for plastic surgery procedures."

Were you one of those patients who helped increase the 2011 numbers, or will 2012 be the year you opt for a cosmetic procedure? Let us know!

Make your own face masks....

Julyne Derrick shows up how to make our very own masks from common household ingredients -

Why pay for a face mask when you can use basic ingredients found around the house to make your own simple, hydrating masks and scrubs? If you have oily or acne-prone skin, mud or clay-based masks are great for balancing out your skin. Dry skin will benefit from hydrating masks made from glycerin, honey and oils. Ginseng or green tea masks are great for soothing sensitive skin. Scrubs are great for getting rid of the dead skin. Try one prior to applying a face mask.
Masks (homemade or storebought -- see my list of the Best Face Masks) should stay on for 10-15 minutes. I strongly recommend following my Basic At-Home Facial to get the full benefit of a facial mask.

All Skin Types

Egg White Face Mask for All Skin Types
Model Shalom Harlow calls this face mask, "so moisturizing and soothing." The best part? It only has 2 ingredients.
Oatmeal and Yogurt Mask for All Skin Types
This is a great basic face mask that includes just 3 basic ingredients.
White Sugar Scrub for All Skin Types
Sugar is a preferred exfoliant to salt because it tends not to tear at the skin. When dead skin collects on the surface of skin, it's important to slough it away. Use oil instead of water if you have dry skin.
Rejuvenating Pumpkin Mask for All Skin Types
Pumpkin pulp is full of antioxidants. This recipe is adapted from one in Vogue Magazine that was created by a well-known Santa Monica facialist.
Homemade 'Cat Litter' Mask for All Skin Types
We got this recipe off a TV show years ago. The beauty expert (Diane Irons) swore cat litter is made of the same ingredients as special clays found in $100 spa facials. We tried this and loved it.
Yogurt Face Mask for All Skin Types
This refreshing face mask is made up of only 2 ingredients.
Homemade Clay Mask for All Skin Types
This clay mask will make skin super soft. Natural skin brightener recipe from India (July 2008 Cosmopolitan Magazine) Mix a tablespoon of turmeric powder in 1 cup of plain yogurt. Leave on for 5-10 minutes, then rinse off.

Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

Banana Mask for Oily Skin This recipe requires super-ripe bananas and a bit of honey. Aspirin Mask for Healing Pimples, Acne Crush aspirin and mix in water/oil/honey for a mask meant to dry up pimples. Makeupalley.com users swear by this mask (out of 2030 reviewers at the time of this writing, a whopping 85 percent said they would "try it again").

Strawberry Mask for Acne-Prone Skin Strawberries are a natural source of salicylic acid. Recipe from Janice Cox, author of "Natural Beauty at Home."
Simple Mask for Oily, Acne-Prone Skin
Recipe adapted from Paula Begoun's "The Beauty Bible." Green Clay Mask for Oily Skin Types
This clay mask will help draw out excess sebum from pores.
Homemade Clay Mask for Oily or Acne-Prone Skin
Clay masks help neutralize skin. You can pick up clay from any health-food store.
Homemade Juice Mask for Oily Skin
Strawberry and lemon juice contain natural astringents.

Dry, Chapped Skin (Recipes Also Good for Mature Skin)

Homemade Face Mask for Dry Skin
Avocados and honey are particularly moisturizing. Homemade Milk Mask for Dry Skin
Milk works beautifully to moisturize dry skin.
Brown Sugar Scrub for the Face
Brown sugar is a wonderful natural exfoliant that works for all skin types. I adapted this recipe from one suggested by Lena Korres, founder of Korres Natural Products, and makeup artist Jemima Kidd, in the July 2008 issue of Cosmopolitan.
Video: Dark Chocolate Face Mask for Dry Skin
Who says chocolate is bad for your skin? The cocoa solids in chocolate are excellent for moisturizing, so this mask is the perfect remedy for dry skin. This video shows you how to make a dark chocolate face mask at home.

Combination Skin

Homemade Face Mask for Combination Skin
A rose-based mask is perfect for balancing out the oily and dry areas of your skin.

Sensitive Skin

This soothing mask is great for chapped, sunburned or irritated skin.

Treatment for Dry, Cracked Feet

How To Get Rid of Dry, Cracked Heels
Dry, cracked feet are never sexy. While this tends to be a summer hazard, it can happen all year-round. If you can't afford a fish pedicure, get rid of dry heel syndrome with this 5-step process I cobbled together and use myself from time-to-time.

Hair Masks & Hair Rinse Recipes

Hair Mask: Homemade Hair Mask & Hair Rinse Recipes
Why spend money on a store-bought hair mask or rinse when you can make your own hair recipes using ingredients found in your kitchen (or your backyard). These do-it-yourself recipes for the hair are great for different hair textures and types.

Make Your Own Sugar or Salt Scrub

Body Scrubs: How to Make Salt and Sugar Scrubs
Head to a posh spa and you can treat yourself (for a mere $100-$300) to an all-over body scrub. Or you can spend up to $50 on a fancy body scrub. Why buy when you can make a homemade body scrub out of basic ingredients yourself? All you need is salt or sugar, body oil and a nice, warm bath.

Hyaluronic Acid.....FAB stuff!

Hyaluronic acid

A hydrating, gel-like molecule, hyaluronic acid (HA) holds a thousand times its weight in water, drawing moisture from the air to fill wrinkles. For this reason, HA—available in a range of products including serums, lotions, masks, and gel cap supplements—is among the ultimate ingredients for turning back the hands of time.

Rose Hip Oil, why i love it

Are you using a product with Rose Hip Oil in it? Rose Hip Oil is an excellent skin moisturizer, it is very hydrating and nourishes your skin, it also helps to restore your normal skin color.

Here is a definition of Rosehip- The fruit of the rose bush, high in Vitamin C, soothing, moisturizing, and hydrating to the skin. May help protect against capillary damage and firm the tissues.

It has been called one of the very best anti-aging oil by many scientists as well.  It has only been studied as a beneficial skin care ingredient since the early 80's and has had great studies to back it up.  http://www.rosehipoil.co.uk/acatalog/scientific_studies.html

The Real Age skin test...

Your Skin Age test, from Real Age - http://www.realage.com/beauty-skin-care/skin-age-test?src=edit&chan=anti-aging&con=flipbook&click=related
Ready to figure out just how young or how old your skin really is? If you're between 30 and 70,* this test will do the trick. Plus, you'll learn the latest on skin care, wrinkle fighting, and cosmetic procedures. Although the SkinAge Test calculation works for both men and women, many of the recommendations are intended just for women. Let's get started:
  1. Wash your face or take a shower.
  2. Dry off, and rub in some moisturizer (it won't affect your visual exam).
  3. Take a good look in the mirror as you answer the test's questions. And try not to cheat! That means fessing up to things you'd rather ignore and not pulling or tugging on your skin to influence what you see. No one is watching you, and you won't be graded, so be true to yourself.
* Younger than 30? You don't have enough visible aging to measure yet. Older than 70? The gap between your SkinAge and your calendar age won't be significant.
